When taking the MBTI®, remembering the following points will increase accuracy:
- Relax and answer each question honestly.
- Avoid dwelling on any particular question or attempting to make your answers consistent with one another.
- Answer each question based on what is truly "you" and has been "you" for most of your life, not based on your ideal version of yourself or traits you've recently made a conscious effort to develop.
- Think about your preferences when you are in your "shoes off" mode or when you have the most choice about how you behave. Avoid focusing on how you behave in any specific context like work since those may be learned behaviors you’ve developed to match what is expected of you.
- Remember that no one is entirely consistent in sticking with their preferences in every situation. The MBTI® is trying to measure your general preference in the majority of situations.
- Of the four personality traits that the MBTI® is assessing, you'll likely find that one or more is very situational. You are probably very "balanced" on those dimensions based on your life experience and therefore your coach will spend more time on those dimensions in your type verification session to separate your natural vs. learned tendencies.
